Epson scanners are generally well supported on Linux. There are two kinds of drivers for this scanner on Linux: SANE and EPSON AVASYS. The AVASYS driver (the epkowa backend) is somewhat difficult to make run and IMHO it's not worth the trouble, xsane with the SANE snapscan backend offer more and better features.
There's an excellent page by Pascal Niklaus describing how to make the scanner run under Linux with the SANE snapscan backend. Just one additional note: If you're looking for 16-bit scanning support, it's available in SANE CVS, to be released soon as sane-backends 1.0.17.
